MY GRANDFATHER   Tech/Sgt. Robert Coleman Wyland* b. on Jan 17, 1916 in VA. Enlisted on July 7, 1941 he left for his final exam at Roanoke, Va, he passed the exam and boarded a train for Camp Lee ( Fort Lee) at midnight. Arrived at Camp Lee early in the morning of July 8, 1941 spent 3 days at Camp Lee and was sent to Camp Wheeler, GA, we were their about 4 or 5 days. On Oct 16, 1941 when basic was finished he was transfer from Camp Wheeler, GA to the 211th Military Police Co. Jackson's Barracks, New Orleans. On April 1, 1942 was transfer to the 230th Military Police Co. Jackson's Barracks. On June 1, 1942 was transfer to New Orleans, Staging area. On Aug 8, 1942 was transfer to Jackson's Barracks. On Sept 20, 1943 attend Tank school at Ford Plank, he like this work. On Dec 29, 1943 was transferred to N. O. P. E. Ships compement. Staff Sgt 230th Military Police Co. Jackson's Barracks. On April 19, 1945 in the fight for Nishibaru Ridge, Private First Class Olsen displayed outstanding courage and heroism as, without regard for his own personal safety, he dashed across fifty yards of fire-swept terrain to go to the aid of two wounded comrades who were lying exposed to enemy fire. After administering first aid and getting the men to cover, he maintained his forward position and successfully neutralized the fire from two enemy pillboxes with his automatic rifle while his platoon reorganized and came to his aid. Private First Class Olsen's heroic action resulted in saving the lives of two men and made it possible for his platoon to successfully drive the enemy from the forward slope of the ridge. On April 28, 1945. During the battle for Sawtooth Ridge, Private First Class Olsen found himself, on one occasion, far in advance and cut off from his platoon. Instead of seeking cover and trying to withdraw, he put his automatic rifle into action and in thirty minutes, destroyed two knee mortars, a light machine gun and killed thirteen of the enemy. This heroic and courageous action enabled his squad to join him and inflict heavy casualties on the enemy while the company brought support ing weapons to bear on the enemy positions. On June 24, 1944 He said his turret had been hit by flak, his turret had been set a fire as well as himself by incendiaries, he got out of his turret to put the fire out on himself also the one in the turret. He had reached back into the turret to fire some more and he had been hit again. The waist Gunner examined the body in flight and reported a number of wounds from gun fire (wounds were found in his stomach, chest and head). His turret was shot away and half of his head and face were gone and also blood over his body, because of being hit with rocket from a german plane. He was lying next to the tail turret after the ship crashed. He was buried with two other boys on the farmers land that the ship crashed on. The B24 Flak Magnet 42-94984 at 9:35 AM it broke out in flames in the nose portion of the fuselage. Soon after the ship left formation and exploded and crashed approximately 9:40 AM in a large wheat field near Buzau, Romania. approximatly three miles from the above town.
