General James Longstreet

General James Longstreet rode around the Confederate right in an effort to extend his attack to the east. There he was accidentally shot by his own men, just as Stonewall Jackson had been one year earlier, almost to the day, during the battle of Chancellorsville. Longstreet was seriously wounded in the neck and shoulder, but would return later in the year.

The Location where Longstreet was shot.(14)

May 6, 1864 Near here Lt. Gen. James Longstreet was desperately wounded in the course of his counterattack against Hancock's Federal forces. Shortly before noon, as he and his Generals were riding forward with part of his corps on this road, they were fired upon by his own flanking troops. Thus. like "Stonewall" Jackson who had fallen a year before at the hands of his own men less than five miles from this spot. Longstreet was stricken in the full tide of promising attack. Unlike Jackson, Longstreet recovered. He rejoined the army in October and was placed in charge of the Richmond defenses.

General Alexander Hays

As the battle for the Orange Plank Road - Brock Road intersection (13) see-sawed back and forth, General Alexander Hays' brigade joined the Federal troops. Hays stopped briefly to encourage the 63rd Pennsylvania (15) when he was shot in the head and died shortly thereafter.
