Our Soldiers Cemetery:
The Mount Jackson Confederate Hospital's Cemetery,
now called Our Soldiers Cemetery, was dedicated on May 10, 1866
the third anniversary of Stonewall Jackson's death. The "Memorial
and Decoraion Day" organized by the local ladies was one of the first
such observances in the south.

The Confederate Hospital was established at Mount Jackson under the direction
of Dr. Andrew Russell Meem by order of the Confederate Medical Department in
Richmond, Va about Sept 15, 1861. Dr. Meem, a native of the area, was a graduate
of Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania Medical College.
Dr. Meem, on a vist to Harrisonburg Feb 26, 1865, became ill with unknown allment
and died at the age of 41.
The Hospital Consisted of three Two - Story Buildings, 150 Feet Long, Accommodating up to
500 Patients. A Cemetery was established across the valley pike on the west side on the land
belonging to Colonel Levi Rinker.
In the summer of of 1865, the 192nd Ohio Volunteer Milita tore down the hospital and built a
large village, including a Courthouse, Guardhouse, Ballroom and Gallows. At Rude's Hill, three
miles south of Mount Jackson. Federal occupation forces used these buildings throughout the
reconstruction period. When reconstruction ended in 1875, the structures were removed.
 
1st Lieut. Daniel C. King
Enlisted on May 1, 1861 at Rutherford County, NC into Co. D, 16th NC Infantry
at the age of 18 years old. In Sept 61- March 62 promoted to Corpl. On Apr 26, 1862
promoted to 2nd Lieut. On Sept 1, 1862 promoted to 1st Lieut. On July 3, 1863 Wounded
at Gettysburg, PA. On July 28, 1863 He died of wounds at Mount Jackson, VA.
Pvt. Solomon Shrader
Enlisted on June 18, 1861 at Hertford County, NC into Co. E, 62nd VA Mounted
Infantry. Transfer from company E to company C. He also service in Co. F, 25th
VA Infantry. On Aug 15, 1863 He died of fever at Mt Jackson Hospl, Richmond, VA.
Pvt. John Hackett
Enlisted on Sept 19, 1861 as a Private into Co. E, 60th GA Infantry
On Aug 27, 1862 Wounded at Bristoe Station, VA. On July 2, 1863 Wounded
at Gettysburg, PA. He died at Shenandoah County, VA. Buried in Mount Jackson
Cemetery, Shenandoah County, VA.
