Martin Van Burean Campbell b. on Oct 31, 1916 in VA. Enlisted June 10, 1861 at Culpeper Courthouse, VA at the age of 19 into the Nelson Grays Co. G, 19th Va Infantry. He was assigned as a teamster. Then he was a courier for General George Pickett from October 1862 to December 1864, and was known for daring in carrying dispatches between the lines. His grandfather gave him a fine horse when he went into the army. The horse was shot from under him and he sent for the second one. His grandfather sent another horse and told him more positively that this was the last one he would send, as there was only one more saddle horse left, named Selim. But when again Martin asked for a horse, the second horse having come to an untimely end, needless to say, Selim was sent. After the war he was a farmer in Nelson County. His military Info came of my aunt Florrie Campbell's Notes. (Brother of Daniel Goode Campbell and Thomas J. Campbell)
