James Keith Marshall b. on April 25, 1843 in Audley, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1860. Enlisted on April 29, 1861 at Chowan County, NC into Co. M, 1st NC Infantry. On May 25, 1861 promoted to Capt. On Nov 12, 1861 he was Mustered Out of service with unit a 6-mo regt. On April 23, 1862 promoted to Colonel as of Co. S, 52nd Inf Regmt and he was commissioned into Field & Staff NC 52nd Infantry. Commanded Brig. Genl. J. J. Pettigrew at Gettysburg.On July 3, 1863 he shot in the forehead and expired immediately in Pickett's Charge "right up at the Stonewall" at Gettysburg, Pa.
