![]() Confederate Veteran George Walker Gilmer. Confederate unform George Walker Gilmer b. on Jul 10, 1845 in Amherst Co, VA. 17 years old. Enlisted on Jun 16, 1863 at Snicker's Gap, VA as a Private into Co. C, 2nd VA Cavalry. On Jun 30, 1863 wounded in his right shoulder by a shell and horse killed in Westminister, MD. On Jul 3, 1863 in his right temple (resulting in loss of right eye) was caused by a miniball and POW in Gettysburg, PA (it was extracted by Dr. Burerette of Washington, DC, in the winter of 1897 more than thirty four years after the wound was rec'd). On Jul 15, 1863 wounds caused him to be left behind & he fell into the hands of the enemy and confined at David's Island, NY. On Jul 30, 1863 He was exchanged in the fall, though unable to sit up in his bed. On Feb 15, 1864 In hospital in Richmond, VA. On May 8, 1864 Served as a courier for Gen Wickham at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. On May 11, 1864 Served as a courier for Gen Wickham at Yellow Tavern, VA. On Jul 16, 1864 Bullet from old wound affected his brain hospitalized at Richmond, VA. On Jul 20, 1864 Hospitalized in Charlottesville, VA. On Aug 10, 1864 Returned. On Oct 31, 1864 Hospitalized in Richmond, VA. On Dec 19, 1864 transferred into Veteran Reserve Corps. On Dec 25, 1864 Hospitalized in Charlottesville, VA. On Dec 31, 1864 Assigned to Invalid Corps in Charlottesville, VA. Late in the summer, however, the yet unhealed wound in his eye, was so seriously affected by the heat & excitement that he was honorably discharged as unfit for service. On Apr 15, 1865 he mustered into 43rd VA Battn Cavalry (Joined Mosby) and was with him till Gen. Lee surrendered. On May 17, 1865 Oath Allegiance in Charlottesville, VA. On Aug 13, 1918 he died in Warren on James River, VA. Buried in Gilmer Cemetery, Rt 795, near Scottsville, VA.
