![]() Confederate Veteran Daniel Goode Campbell. Daniel Goode Campbell enlisted in the Amherst Rifle Grays Co. I, 19th Va Infantry on June 3, 1861 at Charlottesville at the age of 15. He was wounded three times; All were minor wounds; First through the hand; Second through the knee; and third a flesh wound grazing three ribs and the muscles of the upper arm And On June 27,1862 His most serious wounded was from a shell concussion which the shell in the Battle of Gaines' Mill. In June 1862 he was admitted to to Chimborazo Hospital just after the battle of Gaines' Mill. In July 1863 return to his unit. He was transferred from Co. I to Co. G of the 19th Va Infantry and they listed him as D. G. Campbell just after the battle of Gettysburg. He was at the surrender at Appomattox. When he started for home, he dropped his gun in the Appomattox River as he was too weak from the lack of food to swim and take his gun, and there was no other way to cross. There was another man named Small. They had not had a change of clothes in months and were infected with vermin. They came to a nice farmhouse and asked for food and a place to sleep. Daniel said he could have gladly killed Small for he accepted the offer of a bed to sleep in although he knew he was covered with lice. Daniel went to the barn and slept in the hay. After the War he was a farmer in Amherst county. Daniel Goode Campbell was only married one time and that was to Elizabeth Stevens Thompson, his first cousin.(Brother of Martin Van Burean Campbell and Thomas J.
